have you ever wondered how people are able
to freeze motion in the images or are able to capture long exposures like they are able
to capture star trails or car trails and you want to learn them you are in a right place
so hey guys I am Saurav and I am back with the second video of the series where I talk
about stuffs related to photography. The first video was about Aperture where I explained
you what Aperture is and how it should be changed according to the change in situation.
I am going to do the same in this video but this video will be dedicated to Shutter Speed.
So let us understand what Shutter Speed is, to understand that first let us understand
what is actually Shutter. So imagine your camera sensor as your Human Eye, so the shutter
is actually the eye lid so once the eye lid is closed the shutter is closed. So basically
once your camera isn’t fired, once your camera is ideal, the shutter is closed, so that no
light can come in and hit the camera sensor, when you press the shutter button what exactly
happens is your shutter is opened so that the light is allowed to come and hit the camera
sensor and once sensor is done collecting all the light and collecting all the information
it needs the shutter closes and that is how the image is captured. So what is shutter
speed ? Shutter Speed is actually the amount of time that your shutter is open. Basically
the amount of time for which the light can come in and hit the camera sensor. So by adjusting
the shutter speed you’re actually adjusting the amount of time for which your shutter
is open. Shutter speed is expressed in seconds, mostly in fraction of seconds. Like if you
have heard of 1/2 of a second of shutter speed it means you take one second, you make two
pieces of it and you’re using only one piece out of it. So you’re using only half second,
now imagine the shutter speed is 1/100th of a second it means that you take 1 second,
you make 100 equal pieces of it and you’re using only one piece that is 1/100th of a
second, so if the denominator is greater the shutter speed is faster. Now, for example
1/4000th of a second is greater than 1/2000th of a second by greater I mean faster. so 1/2000th
of a second is faster than 1/100th of a second and so on. So this is one side of shutter
speed the second side is where the shutter speed is 10 seconds where the camera is exposed
for ten seconds to the scene. So don’t be confused between 1/10th of a second and 10
seconds. 1/10th of a second is actually 1/10th part of a second and 10 second is complete
10 seconds where the camera is exposed for complete 10 seconds so the exposure can be,
the shutter speed*can be 10 seconds, 20 seconds, 30 seconds or more where the shutter is open
for the longer duration of time. So now I will show you how by changing shutter speed
we can freeze the motion like this or we can capture long star trails or car trails in
a nutshell long exposure photography like this. So now our basic objective is to freeze
the motion so that’s why what we’re going to do is we’re going to use a faster shutter
speed. If you’re using shutter speed like 1/100th of a second or 1/200th of a second
it’s not going to work because the water is going to be out of shape pretty soon. So you
have to use a very fast shutter speed. As i said in the video before anything like 1/2000th
of a second or 1/4000th of a second is going to be appropriate for the situation. Now when
you do this kind of photography it might not be perfect at the first time. You have to practice couple of times, 10 times
maybe even 20 times and then you will get a perfect shot. So now, without further-a-do
lets start getting that shot. So we tried to shooting some of the shots where we tried
to freeze the motion, we try to freeze the water but here you have to remember one thing
while trying such experiments every time you won’t get perfect shots. Like you can see
this couple of shots, they’re good shots but they’re not perfect. The shape isn’t intact,
so you have to practice a little bit till you start getting closer to perfect shots.
So now you can see in the background their are lots of cars coming by and since the light
is very less I am using a mobile flash light so you can see me, in real it’s very dark
so it’s a proper situation where we can set our exposure, where we can set our shutter
speed* to 20 seconds or 30 seconds and get a good car trail shot. So for car trails or
long exposure you have to make sure you don’t have much light in the scene, because since
the light is going to hit the camera sensor for such huge amount of time, for 20 seconds,
you need less light so after 20 seconds you get a good exposure. So now lets start shooting
some car trails and see what results do we get. So when you are taking images you will notice
that some of your images are way too darker than you would expect or some of your images
are way too bright. So this is where practice comes into play, you have to start practicing
and experimenting with shutter speed settings so that you get an image which you had in
mind. You have to practice a lot if you have to master the technique of shutter speed.
So for this particular shot actually I have combined two different images, they’re of
actually same location but they’re two different images. One image is actually of the car trail
which I showed you right now where I kept my shutter speed around 20 seconds or 30 seconds
I guess it was 20 seconds and the second shot is of actually a star trails where you can
see the path of the stars are captured where I exposed my camera for 1 and half hour. So
you can try experimenting with shutter speed and get certain cool effects like this. So
i hope you enjoyed the video guys. This video was about shutter speed, my next video will
be about ISO. So if you like the video hit the like button and subscribe to my channel
so that my upcoming videos as soon as they are released you can watch them. If your friends
are interested in photography make sure you share it with them. So, I will talk to you
guys in the next one. Have a great day, BYE
Happy world Photography day guys! Thanks a ton for the amazing support. I hope I can create better content for you guys. Sayonara 🙂
How to use and click on mobile.
I am a fan of ur english ..and the videos
Fuck bro the most beautiful thing here is the for the first time i landed on an India tutorial and its in English not just the title and intro but the full video….. Thanks so much
Good explanations for the different speeds.
Hi Saurav you nailed it. I have a question….What should be best shutter for hand holding the camera. In low light conditions do I have to boost the ISO for faster shutter speed and by how much
YOU AE REALLY GOOD AT EXPLAINING THINGS I LIKE
YOU MAKE IT LOOK SO MUCH EASIER
Thanks for the good video.
easy to understand.. thanks man..
